Neurology and Aviation Medicine

Safety starts with the Brain

Neurological conditions are among the most challenging issues in aviation medicine – and account for around 10% of all cases resulting in grounding. Typically, this requires two separate specialists: an Aeromedical Examiner (AME) to assess aeromedical fitness and a neurologist to provide the specialist medical assessment.

At NEUROmedical, we bring both perspectives together. This means efficient coordination, a consistent assessment process and a neurological evaluation that takes EASA aeromedical requirements into account from the outset.

In-Depth Neurological Expertise

EEG, neurography and neurosonography – specialist neurological diagnostics, often completed on the same day

Aeromedical Expertise

Assessment with an in-depth understanding of aeromedical requirements under Part-MED

For Pilots of all Classes & Crew Members

Neurological assessments for pilots of all licence classes and crew members

On-Site Diagnostics

Specialist Examination – all in one Day

Electroencephalography (EEG)
Brain activity recording and assessment of seizure risk

Neurography (ENG/EMG)
Nerve and muscle function

Neurosonography
Ultrasound examination of peripheral nerves and blood vessels supplying the brain / duplex ultrasound

Neuropsychology
Cognition & vigilance, if required

Evoked Potentials
Objective assessment of sensory pathways (visual, auditory and somatosensory)

Gait & Tremor Analysis
Balance and fine motor skills

Neurological Reasons for an Assessment

Common Conditions & Clinical Questions

  • Migraine & Headache
Aura, frequency, medication and their relevance to cockpit duties

  • Dizziness & Balance Disorders
Vestibular evaluation and assessment of spatial orientation

  • Epileptic Seizures
First seizure, provoking factors and risk of recurrence

  • Stroke & TIA
Residual symptoms, secondary prevention and return to professional duties

  • Traumatic Brain Injury
Clinical course, cognitive consequences and post-traumatic seizure risk

  • Syncope
Differentiation between neurological and cardiac causes of unexplained loss of consciousness

  • Peripheral Nerve Disorders & Injuries
Neurographic assessment of sensory and motor function

  • Assessment of
movement disorders, including tremor and Parkinsonian syndromes, inflammatory diseases of the central nervous system and the consequences of intracranial tumours

  • Neurological Assessment of Abnormal Brain MRI Findings

Your Neurological Assessment in four simple steps

Our Service for You

01

Enquiry & Clinical Question

Tell us about your case – whether you contact us directly as a pilot, through your AME or via an aviation authority. We will determine which documents and medical records are already available.

02

Review of Your Medical Records

Your previous medical records are reviewed via a password-protected upload system compliant with the GDPR. We will let you know if any additional documentation is required. You will also receive the necessary confidentiality waiver and declaration of cost coverage.

03

In-Person Examination

Whenever possible, the neurological examination and any additional diagnostic testing are completed during a single appointment. Assessments cannot be conducted by video consultation.

04

Preparation of the Medical Assessment

Following the examination, the medical assessment is generally completed within two weeks and sent to you or to the commissioning authority or organisation.

Costs & Fees

A fixed fee cannot be offered, as the cost depends on the scope of work involved, including the review of medical records, examination and preparation of the assessment. Fees are charged in accordance with the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ); assessments commissioned by authorities or courts are billed in accordance with the JVEG.

We will discuss the anticipated scope and associated costs with you in advance.

Our Network is Your Advantage

Working together for Your Aeromedical Fitness

If neurological diagnostics alone are not sufficient, we draw on an established network of specialized partners. Particularly for pilots travelling from further afield, most examinations can be completed in a single day thanks to short distances and close coordination – without having to wait weeks between appointments with different specialists.

Cardiology

Comprehensive cardiac diagnostic testing when required – from exercise ECG and echocardiography to the detailed evaluation of syncope.

Neuroradiology

High-resolution imaging – including brain MRI, cardiac CT and other cross-sectional imaging techniques for the objective assessment of neurological findings.

Epileptology

Specialist evaluation of seizure disorders – including long-term EEG monitoring, differential diagnosis and a comprehensive assessment of the risk of recurrence.

Neuropsychology

Neuropsychological assessment of cognition, attention and vigilance when objective performance testing is required.
