When is a Neurological Assessment required?

We receive requests for neurological assessments directly from pilots, from fellow aeromedical examiners and from authorities such as the German Federal Aviation Office (LBA). An assessment is usually required when an additional neurological question arises that the AME cannot conclusively evaluate on the basis of the existing medical findings alone.

The legal basis is Regulation (EU) No 1178/2011, Annex IV (Part-MED). The underlying aeromedical assessment essentially focuses on three key questions:

  • 1

Is there, or has there been, a medical condition?
If so, what is the condition, and has it been confirmed through medical history and diagnostic testing?

  • 2

Has the condition resolved, or are symptoms still present?
Does it result in any limitations that could affect the safe exercise of the privileges of the licence?

  • 3

What is the risk of recurrence?
The likelihood of the condition recurring is a key factor in the assessment.
